Visions
Yurba
Fighter
Dichotomy
After putting the pieces together, her life became a tapestry of ironies. On one side, she was a loving mother by today's standards, but on the other side, she instrumented the demise of everybody who opposed her husband.
My fear manifested in the form of a multi-headed spawn. It lived inside my closet and crawled towards me when I turned the light off. Its faces were of those who had spoken ill of my father. Envy was the spawn's driven force. Forgiving who offended my dad's memory was my only weapon.
Gossip
“Oh, Edna! Whisper to me those dirty secrets that make my life seem perfect. And in turn, you may indulge in being the center of attention before being irrelevant again.”
“We both crave for these moments of divine immortality, don't we?”
“Most certainly, darling.”
Fence
“Laugh at life”
“Why?”
“Because life takes itself very seriously, and laughing piss it off.”
“Oh, that's our defense.”
“You got it.”
Resilience
“Ladies aren't fit for the interplanetary fleet,” so they said.
“Your heart is too frail to endure the hardships of space,” so they said in the space academy. Nowadays, she's commanding the first solo mission to Ganymede.
Hers is a story of resilience.
Cast Away
My home star is now just a blinking yellow dot in the darkness of night.
My life is no more than a grain of sand in the eternity of space.
Crash
Muse
“You’re my muse, my inspiration, my darling!”
“Are you certain that this is an abstract painting?”
“As sure as I can be, darling.” His eyes squinted while a smile of satisfaction appeared on his face.
“Isn’t it … amusing?”
“Yeah, I guess so.”
Find Yourself
He spent years fighting that illusory perception of self, by merging with the background, by trying to be invisible, but he failed every time.
Finally, he understood that the real challenge was not to get lost, but to find himself, and then he found permanent serenity.
Requisition
In his time, he was a rebel, a visionary, so he replaced all his healthy body members with cyber implants, only his brain was partially organic.
Unfortunately, he couldn't pay the bills according to his data file, so his entire body was reclaimed.
His brain is stored in a jar somewhere.
Defiant
They have banned me again; isolation and defamation is how they silence you in this city.
They claim that we cannot leave the underground city due to the high radiation levels. So, I made this mecha-spider to defy the confinement and get a sample of the outside atmosphere.
Vertigo
It was his signature stunt. “I don’t have the gene for height fear,” one time said to me. “My family has been in the business of skyscrapers building for generations.”
Yesterday, he was posing for a selfie. Today, we gathered to say goodbye.
Mean Girls
Lazy Saturdays chewing bubble gums, the candy perfume in the air, and mean looks at horny boys became routine those days.
Our act was well rehearsed, but my satisfaction was incomplete.
Adapt
“Our top priority is climate change,” so our leaders said to gain people's support.
Seventy years later, our cities are flooded and radioactive, and we still addicted to oil.
Our leaders? They're safe and healthy in the new orbital city. Bastards!
Conditional Surrender
The last combat was a disaster for us. The aftermath of survivors was zero. The verdict was capitulation.
Their delegate claimed Venus as a price. Nikita opposed, infuriated; the rest of the countries agreed with disdain: better Venus than Earth.
Messenger
An angel, a messenger, white as a dove, silent as a ghost, appeared next to me. “You have to retake your life,” he said to me in soundless words.
My hearth was pounding, my hands were trembling, not only by the apparition, but rather by his missive.
Meta
The fall of civilization coincides with the rise of the metaverse. People embraced this illusion with passion, and looked at the real world with disdain. Soon after, the first narcolepsy pandemic wiped them out almost entirely. They were not ready.
Observant
Occasionally, I like to study the complexities of human interaction without participating in the conversation. Follow the spiral arguments until you figure out the fundus of the pit, the bottom line, then quickly leave the room before you get dragged in.
Tourists
The time militia hijacked our time vessel under the false idea that it was an extraterrestrial vehicle. Hence, we've sent another time vessel to rescue our agents. It got strained in a location called Tasmania in 1947, a primitive land.
Last
Breaking with the traditional family gathering, Julio embarked on a trip to Milan, unknowing that this would be his last.
His final text message to his mother was trivial, forgettable, and yet she treasured it as the last words of his son.
The DUST BOWL
A black blizzard hit our farm in 1931, and we were unprepared.
“Who did it?” said uncle Joe while driving.
“It was God” replied aunt Marie with her sweet voice.
I listened to their conversation from the back sit; I was scared. Years after, they called it the Dust Bowl.
Apprehension
We had covered a quarter of the distance, so a checkup was due before the deceleration maneuver.
I'm a bit jumpy after the radio comm went down. “Nothing to worry about,” I keep saying.
“Oh boy! These thrusters are huge. What if they ignite now.”
Prototype
“Permission to speak freely Sir”
“Granted.”
“Half of us got stuck in the muddy land, and those that didn't get out of that eggshell were shut in the butts by enemy fire.”
“I see. Any suggestions?”
“Yes Sir. Don't test your damn toys with us on the battlefield.”
Evil Pupil
“Your daughter doesn’t like me. She is up to something.”
“No, she isn't up to anything, and her name is Emily.”
“Guess what? Emily is making a rag doll and pinching needles in its head.”
“It’s a sewing needle holder!”
“It’s a voodoo doll of me!”
Bait
That moonless night, I adventured too deep into the forest, poorly armed and alone, tracking a prey that was nothing but a bait.
Fool of me for ignoring their warnings.
The rumbling roar and the fetid stanch of the amarok anticipated the cruel truth: I was the prey.
Party
It wasn't difficult for the simulation of Jimi Hendrix to retake his posthumous position of the best guitar player.
I attended the dinner through my remote avatar, this time I was a white angel, though no one seemed to care.
The party was a success!
Ironic
The next time jump took me to a time when people listened to the starts to find out if they were alone, ignoring the quiet call for help of those living on the same planet. Ironic.
Superficial Prophets
Adventuring back in time even further, I saw emblems of forgotten troubadours, prophets of fallacies that never came true. This ancient culture was full of contradictions. It would take years of study for our best scholars.
Master
She is destined to be the Queen of the new order, beautiful as a rough diamond, born to rule us all.
I have been commissioned to take her out of the continent by night, and bring her to this small island of pirates, to a castle where her education will begin.
Lost Love
Eiryō was a geisha in the 1910s Tokyo. It was the twilight of her life. Tadeo Kawai, a famous actor at the time, made her his mistress, and she stepped into the spotlight. But, when she disappeared mysteriously from public life after being hospitalized, her legend began.
Living in Time
When I take a break from my night shift at the restaurant, I climb to the roof, light a smoke, and contemplate the city lights. My furry friend often tumbles next to me and grooms itself. In those ephemeral moments, I allow myself to be happy. How about you?
Intention
Locked
“Storming towards the land of evil, retreat I shall not, for the pious are shielded from temptation,” said the monk while entering the gateway left behind by the time traveler. He didn’t know about the DNA lock that prevents intruders from crossing.
His death was quick.
Family
“Greetings native creatures of this realm,” the alien said with a crispy voice. “We travel to distant planets to answer a capital question for our civilization: how can creatures with different sexes cohabitate?”
Uncle Jack replied after a while: “We just need of each other, that’s it!”
His answer perplexed the visitors, who said no more and left at once.
Consciousness
Our story begins in a point outside space, and a time before the beginning. One morning we noticed a rainbow, a white cloud in the sky, the feeling of warm light on our hands. That marks the verge of awareness. Becoming oneself means to be fragmented, alone. And since that moment, we keep seeking to reunite. That's our struggle.
Migration
Eventually, we learned how to escape the tyranny of reality. Our ancestors uploaded to the paraverse where we are limitless; we finally left the physical plane, a new beginning.
Earth is now ruled by monkeys, so I heard.
Singularity
We built it because we could do it, to show our superiority, to bound our adversaries' greed.
The bomb produces a singularity large enough to eat a planet the size of Jupiter in a few hours.
We tested it outside the asteroid belt, but something went wrong. Now we need to fix it.
